From flipping pancakes to pancake-themed games, we’ve got you covered with exciting ideas to make your Pancake Day extra special.
Make Pancakes – Simple Recipe
The first and most obvious pancake day activity is to make some pancakes!
Here in the U.K., our pancakes tend to be thin, similar to French crepes. I’ve put together a simple recipe below to help you get started.
You Will Need:
- 100 grams of flour
- 300 MLS of Milk
- 2 eggs
- Oil or butter for cooking
- Your choice of toppings eg. lemon, sugar, syrup etc.
Method:
1. Mix together the flour, eggs and milk in a mixing bowl.
2. Heat a teaspoon of oil in a nonstick pan over medium heat.
3. Add half a ladle of pancake mix to the pan, and using the handle, move the pan around so the mixture spreads out evenly.
4. Cook for around one minute on each side, until golden brown.
5. Serve with your choice of toppings.
Make Pancake Toppings
You could make many different toppings for your pancakes such as chocolate sauce, caramel sauce or even fruit kebabs.
You could also whip cream, chop up nuts or slice up some bananas.

Have A Pancake Tossing Contest
Having a pancake tossing contest is great fun for children and adults alike.
Did you know that Australian chef Brad Jolly, achieved 140 flips in just 60 seconds in 2012?
You could see how many tosses each of you can do in one minute, or you could have a pancake tossing race around the house or garden.
Don’t forget to be mindful of safety when tossing pancakes – make sure all pans and pancakes are cooled before giving them to children!
Discuss The Meaning of Shrove Tuesday
Of course, Shrove Tuesday isn’t just about the pancakes.
You might want to talk to your children about why it is such an important day in the Christian calendar.
Here are some talking points you could use:
- It’s a day when people get ready for Lent, a time of 40 days when they might give up something special.
- On Shrove Tuesday, people often eat pancakes because they use up ingredients like eggs, milk, and sugar that they might not eat during Lent.
- It’s a fun day to enjoy delicious food before starting this special season of reflection and preparation.
- Lent lasts for 40 days, symbolizing the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert.
- By giving up something like sweets, social media, or a favourite activity, people try to focus more on their faith and less on distractions – helping them feel closer to god.
