Tips For Buying On Vinted

Are you new to Vinted? Or just looking to improve your experience? These are my top tips for buying on Vinted, finding the best bargains and making sure you avoid any common scams.

Let’s be honest, shopping on Vinted can be a bit of a minefield.

One minute you’re finding amazing bargains, the next you’re wondering if that ‘brand new’ jacket has actually been through three kids already.

After a fair bit of trial and error (and a couple of dodgy buys), I’ve picked up some tips that should make the whole experience smoother.

Whether you’re hunting for kids’ clothes, shopping more sustainably, or just trying to save some money, here’s what I’ve learned about buying smart on Vinted.

Tips For Buying On Vinted

Make Sure You’re Seeing The Right Sizes

If you’re new to Vinted, it’s a good idea to take a few minutes to adjust your settings.

This will help you see clothing in the right sizes and styles for you, and filter out items that don’t match your preferences.

Just a heads up, you can’t filter by gender, so if you’re shopping for different kids, you might end up scrolling past sparkly dresses in your dino fan’s size, or T. rex onesies in your glitter-loving seven-year-old’s.

Filter Price: Low to high

Love a bargain?

One of the easiest ways to snag great deals on Vinted is by using the price filter. Sellers can list items for as little as £1, and you’d be surprised at the gems you can find at this price!

Just keep in mind that even with super low prices, you’ll still need to pay Vinted’s buyer protection fee and shipping costs, so a £1 item usually ends up costing just over £4 in total.

While for some items this is worth it, for others, especially those that might well have been low value to begin with, you might be better off bundling together with some other things.

Favourite (heart) Items to Compare Prices/Condition

If you spot something you like on Vinted but aren’t ready to buy just yet, tap the heart icon to save it to your favourites list.

This makes it easy to compare prices and conditions of similar items later.

Keep in mind, though, good deals can go fast, so if it’s something you really want, don’t wait too long.

Adding items to your favourites also lets the seller send you a special discount or notifies you if the price drops, which is a great way to get a better deal without having to make an offer yourself if this isn’t something you feel comfortable doing.

Let The Algorithm Do Its Thing

One thing I like about Vinted is how quickly its algorithm works. If you search for the same item for a couple of days in a row, your home feed will soon be filled with similar listings.

This is handy when you’re hunting for a bargain, as the home feed shows lots of new listings, and sometimes you can find new sellers offering free postage.

The only downside is that you might keep seeing the same type of item for several days, even after you’ve already bought it.

Well, at least until the algorithm updates again!

Save Your Favourite Searches

Another useful feature on Vinted is the option to save your searches.

If you’re looking for something specific, like a certain brand, size, or style, you can set up your search with filters and save it for coming back to later.

This means you don’t have to type in the same keywords every time you open the app.

Plus, Vinted will automatically show you any new items that match your saved search, so you’ll be one of the first to see new listings. It’s an easy way to keep track of what you want without constantly scrolling!

‘Unbranded’ Usually Means Shein / Temu

When an item is listed as “unbranded” on Vinted, it often means it’s from fast-fashion retailers like Shein or Temu.

These pieces tend to be lower quality, have inconsistent sizing, and are sometimes incorrectly labelled as vintage.

As someone who cares about slow fashion, I usually avoid buying from these brands, whether new or secondhand.

Vinted is all about promoting eco-friendly fashion, which can feel tricky because ideally, we should buy less and choose higher-quality items.

That said, buying these pieces secondhand at least gives them a second chance instead of them heading straight to landfill.

Ultimately, it’s about making thoughtful choices that work for you while supporting a more sustainable approach to fashion and simply being mindful about what you bring into your wardrobe.

Double Check Sizing On Kids’ Clothing

Searching for Kids’ clothing on Vinted can be a bit confusing, thanks to the sizing options offered to sellers. It’s straightforward up to age three, as you can search by months, like 24–36 months.

But once you get into older sizes, listings switch to whole ages such as 5 years, 6 years, 7 years, and so on.

In the UK, the majority of kids’ clothes are sold in age ranges such as 5-6. The tricky part is that many sellers aren’t sure whether to list an item labelled 5–6 as 5 years or 6 years, since there’s no specific 5–6 category.

This means that if you’re searching for clothes in size 6–7, you’ll often see lots of 5–6 items mixed in.

It’s something I wish Vinted would improve, especially as some clothing brands, such as Next and Sainsbury’s, actually do sell clothes by a specific year.

Personally, I never know if an age 5 item is closer to 4-5 or 5-6. I would like to be able to just filter out the options I don’t want.

More than once, I’ve almost bought the wrong size and only caught it at the last minute. My advice is always to double-check the label in the photos and ask the seller if you’re unsure!

There needs to be both single and mixed year options when listing clothes (hopefully, Vinted is reading this!).

Check All Photos And Ask For More If Needed

It’s worth taking the time to carefully scroll through all the photos on Vinted, and don’t hesitate to ask the seller for more pictures if you need them.

Here are a few things to watch out for:

  • The size and brand on the label do not match what’s described.

  • Shoes without photos of the soles make it hard to ascertain the overall condition.

  • Marks or damage mentioned but not shown, you’ll want to see how serious they are.

  • Folded clothing can make it hard to judge length and style.

  • Blurry pictures. Personally, I’d avoid these items!

  • Only part of the item is visible – ask for full photos if you’re interested.

Being thorough with photos helps you make sure you know exactly what you’re buying.

Read The Description Carefully

One thing that can be frustrating on Vinted is that sellers give very limited descriptions of their items.

And while no one wants to read an essay, it is helpful to know about any defects before purchasing.

Always read the full description before purchasing, as sometimes there might be information that isn’t visible from the photos.

Make An Offer To Lower The Price

It can be frustrating when something you love is a bit over your budget, but Vinted makes it easy to offer the seller a lower price.

The seller can accept your offer, decline it, or suggest a counteroffer instead.

Negotiating is very common on Vinted. Many sellers price their items a little higher than they want, expecting buyers to make lower offers.

Check Reviews Before Buying

Look for sellers with high ratings and positive comments. This reduces the risk of issues

However, having few or no reviews isn’t always a red flag. Everyone has to start somewhere on Vinted, whether they’re buying or selling for the first time.

If you’re interested in an item from a new seller (which might be worth it for the free postage!), just be sure to read the description, ask any questions you have, and pay through Vinted’s secure system to stay protected.

Taking these extra steps means you can still grab a great deal while giving a new seller a chance to build their reputation.

Keep Communication Polite and Negotiate Kindly

Keep communication polite and negotiate kindly. It makes the whole buying experience smoother and more positive for both you and the seller.

A friendly approach can go a long way, and sellers are often more open to offers when treated with respect.

Plus, if you’re rude, there’s always the chance you might end up on one of the many ‘Spotted On Vinted’ type groups where people share odd or rude interactions.

Create Bundles To Save On Postage

Whenever I find something I like on Vinted, I always take a look at what else the seller has listed, as there’s a good chance they have more items in the same size or style.

Or, for example, with books, they might be selling a few by the same author.

This way, I can bundle a few things together and save on postage costs. Many sellers also offer discounts for buying multiple items.

Familiarise Yourself With The Vinted Return Policy

If there’s an issue with your item, you’ll need to reach out to the seller first to try to sort it out directly.

On Vinted, the default policy is that the buyer covers the return postage, even if the item is significantly not as described.

This can be frustrating, especially when the mistake is clearly on the seller’s end, such as receiving the wrong size or colour or an item with damage or marks that weren’t listed.

Some sellers will offer to cover the return shipping themselves or sometimes even issue a full refund without asking for the item back, particularly if they acknowledge the error was on their side.

Vinted isn’t always the most helpful when it comes to resolving disputes, even if you escalate an issue, so it’s good to keep this in mind before buying.

One final piece of advice is to stick to using Vinted for affordable high street pieces rather than spending a lot on designer items.

Don’t Expect Prestine Packing

While it’s the seller’s responsibility to ensure your item arrives in good condition, Vinted is all about sustainability. That means most sellers will reuse packaging from previous orders or other materials like plastic carrier bags.

A paper package being passed between two hands

Of course, whatever your item arrives in should be clean and free from grease or anything that might damage it.

So, don’t be surprised if your parcel looks a little recycled, it’s all part of keeping things eco-friendly while still getting your new (or pre-loved) treasures safely to your door.

How To Get Free Postage On Vinted

Look For New Sellers

First-time sellers on Vinted can often offer free or discounted postage (depending on the shipping option they use) to help secure their first sale.

Unfortunately, there’s no direct way to filter or search specifically for new sellers to take advantage of this.

From my experience, new sellers tend to pop up most frequently in my home feed, especially if I’ve been searching for a particular item recently.

So it’s worth keeping an eye on your feed to spot these deals!

Make An Offer That Would Cover Postage

As I mentioned above, sellers often expect offers on their items. You could offer an amount that would be the equivalent of not paying any postage.

For example, if an item is £20.00, you could make an offer of £17.00, which would cover the shipping costs.

Find Items With Local Pick Up

While local pick-up isn’t usually an option for smaller items like clothes or books, some sellers do offer it for larger, bulkier things that are expensive or impractical to ship.

This is especially common for items like prams, bikes, climbing frames, furniture, or big kids’ toys. Arranging local pick-up can save you a lot on postage and lets you inspect the item in person before taking it home.

If you’re interested in a larger item and local pick-up isn’t mentioned in the listing, it’s always worth messaging the seller to ask if they’d be open to it.

Many are happy to agree if it means an easier sale!

Buy Multiple Items From The Same Seller

Many sellers on Vinted offer discounts when you buy multiple items from their wardrobe; sometimes the savings can be as much as 50% off the total price.

These bundle discounts can be a great way to save money overall, often covering or even exceeding the cost of postage.

If you’re interested in several pieces from the same seller, don’t hesitate to ask if they’d be willing to create a bundle deal for you.

Not only can this help you get a better price, but it also means fewer separate shipments, which is better for the environment and more convenient for you.

Bundling is a win-win for both buyers and sellers and is one of the smartest ways to shop on Vinted!

Avoid Getting Scammed On Vinted

Be Wary Of Royal Mail Postage

One of the riskier traps sellers can fall into on Vinted involves Royal Mail shipping. Unlike other courier options, such as Evri, Royal Mail doesn’t automatically confirm when a parcel’s been delivered.

Instead, it relies on the buyer to manually confirm receipt. And that’s where things can go wrong.

Here’s the issue: if a buyer claims they didn’t receive the item, even when tracking says it was delivered, Royal Mail may not be much help.

You can request GPS delivery data, but if that data shows the parcel landed somewhere close by, a refund is unlikely. In those cases, you’re left without the item and the money.

Some buyers will even go out of their way to message you asking for Royal Mail delivery, especially if you’ve disabled it in your settings.

That’s a potential red flag.

Why?

Even with proof of postage, Vinted often leans toward protecting the buyer and might simply refer you back to Royal Mail for resolution.

From the buyer’s side, Royal Mail is usually the most expensive option anyway and personally, I avoid it altogether. There are so many items on Vinted, it’s rare I can’t find something similar with my preferred courier service anyway.

Always Pay On-Platform

Anyone asking you to complete the transaction elsewhere should be avoided.

Always complete purchases wholly through the Vinted platform, as while the fees can be frustrating, they do protect you if anything goes wrong with the purchase.

Be Wary Of Designer Items

If you’re hunting for designer pieces, Vinted might not be your best bet.

While their terms do require sellers to list only genuine items, the platform can still attract scammers or sellers who unknowingly list knock-offs.

For high-end bags, shoes, or sunglasses, it’s often safer to shop through specialised, reputable resale sites that focus on authentic designer goods.

Vinted has recently introduced a verification service for designer items, but it comes with an extra £10 fee. This can be worthwhile, though. It offers some peace of mind by confirming the item’s authenticity before you buy.

And if you’re selling designer items on Vinted, keep in mind that the platform only insures items up to £500.

That means if something goes missing or gets lost in transit, and your item is worth more than that, you won’t be fully covered.

So, it’s important to weigh the risks carefully before going ahead with an expensive purchase.

Seller Sent The Wrong Item Vinted Scam

One sneaky scam that pops up on Vinted goes like this:

You buy an item, say something around £20, and the seller ships it out.

A day or two later, they reach out, saying they accidentally sent the wrong thing but promise the correct item is on its way.

Then you receive a cheap, crappy item, most definitely not what you ordered.

The seller urges you to confirm the delivery since, technically, you did get a package. Meanwhile, they assure you the real item will arrive soon.

Spoiler alert: it never does.

You’re left out of pocket, stuck with a worthless item, and the scammer has vanished with your money.

If you find yourself in this situation, don’t hesitate to use the ‘I have an issue‘ button right away, even if the seller encourages you not to.

Don’t wait around hoping for the real item because that’s exactly what the scammer is counting on: that you’ll miss the deadline to report the problem.

Final Thoughts

Vinted can be a bit of a treasure hunt – some days you’ll strike gold, other days it’s all stretchy leggings and mystery stains.

But with the right filters, a bit of patience, and a few of these tips in your back pocket, it can be a brilliant way to save money, shop more sustainably, and still find things you (or the kids) actually love.
