Summer Holiday Activity: Funny Face Biscuits

Are you looking for simple and cheap activities for your children this summer holidays?

Well, look no further. Here’s how to make these funny face biscuits.

Last year during the summer holidays, I had a five-year-old and a three-month-old baby.

And while it wasn’t easy, at the least baby slept a lot and couldn’t really go anywhere.

This year will be very different as I now have a very exuberant one-year-old toddling about the place!

While of course, I have plenty of days out, family visits and park trips planned, I also need ideas for those days when we don’t feel like going anywhere or doing anything much.

My daughter is six and loves baking, crafting, colouring and painting.

Basically, anything creative and crafty!

I thought making these biscuits would be a perfect activity for her. Plus, there is no cooking involved, all the grown-up needs to do is make up a little water icing (although older children could probably manage this themselves).

The total cost for this activity if you needed to buy everything would be around £5 although that would depend on where you shop and whether you already have things such as icing sugar and digestive biscuits in the cupboard.

The cheapest place for the sweets was Aldi but the eyes came from B&M and were (I think) £1.50ish.

My daughter made eight biscuits and we still have loads of sweets and biscuits left to have another go later on in the school holidays.

I made up the water icing using 3 TBSP of icing sugar to 2 TSP of water and this would ice around six biscuits. You could double or triple as needed.

The great thing about this activity is that it is perfect if you have many children as the ingredients stretch quite far.

I cut up the banana and shrimp sweets to look like ears and noses as I couldn’t find ear and nose sweets. You could also use any other sprinkles or decorations you already have.

We also cut some strawberry laces to make them shorter for hair and beards, as you can see below.

Summer Holiday Activity: Funny Face Biscuits

You Will Need

  • Digestive or Rich Tea Biscuits
  • Icing Sugar
  • Edible Eyes
  • Selection of Sweets. We used Strawberry Laces, Sour Rainbows, Jelly Teeth & Lips, Bananas and Shrimps

How To Make The Water Icing

  • Place 3 TBSP of icing sugar in a small bowl (no need to sieve)
  • Add 2 TSP of water, one teaspoon at a time until the icing sugar is a thick, spreadable consistency. Double or triple as needed.

Optional

  • You can add a few drops of lemon juice to the icing if you would like
  • You could also colour the icing pink if you have pink food dye

Funny Face Biscuits: Method

  • Place the sweets onto a plate or into small bowls.
  • Give each child a digestive biscuit and allow them to spread on the water icing using a spoon.
  • Children can then use the sweets to decorate their funny face biscuits however they want.
  • The icing should be set after two to three hours and all the decorations will be stuck on.
  • Enjoy! Wrap or cover any biscuits you don’t intend to eat straight away.

Funny Face Biscuits – Hints And Tips

The biscuits don’t have to be human faces – you could dye the icing green and make monster faces instead!

This makes a great birthday party activity and could easily be set up ahead of time if needed. Biscuits could be taken home in plastic bags like these, in place of a traditional party bag.

You could add different sweets to suit your personal tastes and mix with cake decorating items you might already have such as chocolate chips or sprinkles.
